How to Connect Gmail to Mozilla Thunderbird

Published on February 25, 2025

Mozilla Thunderbird is a popular open-source email client that allows users to manage multiple email accounts efficiently. If you use Gmail and want to access your emails through Thunderbird, follow this step-by-step guide to set up your account.

Step 1: Enable IMAP in Gmail

Before configuring Thunderbird, you must enable IMAP access in your Gmail account.

  1. Open Gmail in your web browser and sign in.

  2. Click on the gear icon (⚙️) in the top-right corner and select See all settings.

  3. Navigate to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.

  4. Under the IMAP access section, select Enable IMAP.

  5. Click Save Changes at the bottom.

Step 2: Generate an App Password (If 2-Step Verification is Enabled)

If you have enabled 2-Step Verification for your Google account, you need to generate an app-specific password.

  1. Go to Google’s App Passwords page.

  2. Sign in and select Mail from the dropdown.

  3. Choose the device you are using and click Generate.

  4. Copy the generated password and use it in Thunderbird instead of your regular Gmail password.

Step 3: Add Gmail Account to Thunderbird

  1. Open Thunderbird.

  2. Click on the Menu (☰) button in the top-right corner and select Account Settings.

  3. Click Account Actions at the bottom and choose Add Mail Account.

  4. Enter your name, Gmail address, and password (or app password if applicable).

  5. Click Continue.

  6. Thunderbird will attempt to configure the account automatically. Ensure IMAP is selected.

  7. Click Done and then Finish.

Step 4: Manually Configure Server Settings (If Necessary)

If the automatic setup does not work, configure the settings manually.

  • Incoming Mail (IMAP):

    • Server: imap.gmail.com

    • Port: 993

    • Security: SSL/TLS

    • Authentication: OAuth2 or Normal Password

  • Outgoing Mail (SMTP):

    • Server: smtp.gmail.com

    • Port: 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS)

    • Security: SSL/TLS or STARTTLS

    • Authentication: OAuth2 or Normal Password

    • Username: Your full Gmail address

Step 5: Verify Connection and Sync Emails

Once setup is complete:

  1. Click Get Messages to sync your emails.

  2. Send a test email to verify everything is working properly.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Ensure IMAP is enabled in Gmail.

  • Check for any firewall or antivirus restrictions.

  • If OAuth2 authentication is not available, try enabling Less Secure Apps access (not recommended for security reasons).

  • Update Thunderbird to the latest version for better compatibility.

With these steps, you should now have your Gmail account successfully connected to Thunderbird. Happy emailing!
